You ALWAYS Forget Something

I have a theory that you ALWAYS forget something when traveling. There is just too much to remember. So, what really matters is that you forget something less important. Things like your passport, appropriate clothes, and electric converters are hard to live without and may cause you problems.

What I forgot this trip (and then remembered AT the airport) falls in the category of something you can live without. No Jet Lag Pills. These are amazing natural little pills. You chew one (they are tiny and taste sort of like candy) every two hours while flying. I tried them a few trips ago and I think that they really worked. I guess they fall in the category of "nice to have". It is not terrible that I forgot them. In fact it may be a good scientific experiment. Now I can really tell if they make a difference or not. I think they do.

Several people asked about how long the trip would be ahead of time and all I could say was long, but here is the correct answer. It is a good math problem. We left our house in Austin, TX at 5:30 am on Friday and arrived here in Israel at 9:30 am on Saturday. So, that is a long time, but there was also a long layover in Newark and a time change. Our flight to Newark was 3.5 hours, Then we had a 4.5 hour layover, then we had a 9.5 hour trip to Israel. Check out the time zone difference on the clock on the sidebar.

A new friend from iEARN , an International organization that connects students all over the world with really interesting projects picked me up at the airport. More about her and iEARN tomorrow. She will be my host for a few days.

Leaving Tomorrow

I may be out of contact for a few days. Tomorrow we leave early in the morning. Today has been a day of finding one thing after another that MUST be done before we leave. It is 8 pm and I just ordered sandwiches from a local deli because our refrigerator is totally empty!

So, the next time I write it will be from Tel Aviv!

Shalom!

Countdown 2 Days Left

With only two days left I decided it is time to show you a map of where the airplane will take us on Friday. When I started doing it I could not remember how I did it. I remembered that last year I put a map into the blog. I had to go back and look at it to figure it out. http://2009-odyssey.blogspot.com. I found out that the map is in Google Maps, not Google Earth. If you click on the link at the bottom of the map it will take you to Google Maps and you can put your own marker on the map so that we all can see each other! There are instructions on how to do it right next to the map.

Countdown 4 more days!

At church this morning the kids at Sunday School asked me lots of questions. I could answer some of them, but there were others that I could not answer. Here are the questions.

1. Do you have a passport? YES

2. How big is Israel? It is pretty small. Here is a picture of the size of Israel compared to the USA.
3. What language do they speak? In Israel they speak Hebrew. One Hebrew word is Shalom. That is what people say when they see each other. In Bethlehem they speak Arabic. Merhaba is a word that they use to say "hello".

4. What food do they eat?
One thing they eat is falafel. Falafel are fried balls of ground chickpeas and they are really yummy! They put them in Pita bread and eat them like a sandwich.

5. How do they dress? If you look at the videos on the Wi'am YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/wiamcentre#p/a/u/1/SVkXi-KOlXI you can see that most people dress like we do. Some of the women wear head coverings.

6. What kind of birds do they have? I will have to find out!

7. What do the children play? I will ask them and put a game up here for you to learn about!

8. When are you coming back? On July 18th

9. Are you going in a boat or a plane? On an airplane. See tomorrow's post for something showing where the plane will go.

Thanks for the great questions. I look forward to getting more of them in the comment section!
